That construction wave includes the stock across Charlotte Harbor, Solana, Harbour Heights, Charlotte Park, Cleveland, Warm Mineral Springs, Grove City, Manasota Key, Burnt Store Marina, South Gulf Cove, and Gardens of Gulf Cove. Doors installed during that period, and still hanging on plenty of these houses today, are almost always a single skin of steel over a hollow frame. There was no foam core, no thermal break, and no requirement that there be one. Nobody was building to an insulation standard yet, because for a single-car or two-car garage in this part of Florida, nobody thought it mattered much. It mattered less then. Homes were often smaller, garages were more often detached or separated from living space by a full masonry wall, and central air wasn't leaning on every room the way it does now. What's changed isn't the door. It's what's on the other side of it, a laundry room, a converted den, a bonus room, built later, against a door that was never meant to hold a line against heat. That's the situation on a lot of these original doors: still working, still rolling up and down fine, and doing almost nothing to slow down what comes through the panel.

A single-skin steel door with no insulation absorbs heat all afternoon and holds it. If the garage backs onto an air-conditioned room, that heat doesn't stay put, it migrates through the shared wall, and the AC on that side works harder to make up for it, day after day, all season. It's not a dramatic failure. Nothing breaks. The electric bill just runs a little higher than it should, and the room next to the garage never quite feels as cool as the rest of the house. Here's the honest limit: we can add a foam-core retrofit kit to a sound single-skin door and it will help, but it won't match the R-value of a factory-insulated panel, and if the steel already has rust-through or old dents from being hit, a retrofit is money spent on a door that's near the end of its life anyway. At that point replacement beats patching. If the door still rolls smooth, seals reasonably well at the bottom, and the only issue is heat transfer through bare steel, a retrofit kit is the right call and a lot cheaper than a new door. What to Check
Start with the inside of the panel. If you can see bare, unpainted steel ribs with nothing behind them, or a metal backing with no foam block filling the gaps, you've got an original uninsulated door. Check the bottom seal next, on doors this age it's often the original vinyl, cracked or shrunk enough that daylight shows through at the corners even with the door fully down. That alone lets in more heat than most homeowners realize. Look at the weatherstripping along the side tracks too; on a lot of 1980s and 90s installs it's brittle or missing outright. Put your hand flat on the inside of the door on a warm afternoon and compare it to an interior wall, if the door is noticeably hotter, that's your uninsulated steel doing exactly what it was built to do, which is nothing to stop heat.
